The words ”Hamotzi Lechem min Ha’Aretz” encircle the salt shaker. Each time we salt our challah we are reminded of the saying “You shall not omit salt your covenant with God” (Leviticus 3,13.). As our ancestors in ancient times used to season their offerings with salt, we continue to remind and remember our covenant with God, that lasts forever as salt does, by adding salt to challah.
